History of Awadhi
Awadhi emerged as a literary language in the medieval period. Tulsidas wrote the Ramcharitmanas (1575), one of Hinduism's most important texts, in Awadhi. The language flourished under the Nawabs of Awadh (Lucknow). Today Awadhi is often considered a Hindi dialect but has its own rich literary heritage.
