History of Punjabi
Punjabi derives from Shauraseni Prakrit spoken in ancient Punjab. The Gurmukhi script was standardized by Sikh gurus for religious texts. Punjab's partition in 1947 split the language across two countries and scripts. Punjabi bhangra music and Bollywood/Lollywood cinema have spread Punjabi culture globally.
