Vietnamese was historically written in Chinese characters, then a modified script called Chữ Nôm. Portuguese missionaries introduced the Latin-based Quốc ngữ script in the 17th century, which became standard during French colonization. Vietnamese has absorbed Chinese vocabulary but remains grammatically distinct.
