History of Hmong
The Hmong people originated in southern China and migrated southward over centuries. During the Vietnam War, many Hmong in Laos allied with the US, leading to mass refugee resettlement. Today, large Hmong communities exist in Minnesota, California, and Wisconsin. The RPA writing system was developed by missionaries in the 1950s.
Is Hmong Hard to Learn?
Hmong has 7-8 tones depending on dialect, making it challenging for non-tonal language speakers. Grammar is isolating with fixed word order. The RPA writing system marks tones with final consonants. Different dialects (White Hmong, Green Hmong) have significant differences.
