History of Latvian
Latvian descends from the ancient Baltic peoples who settled the region over 4,000 years ago. It was primarily a peasant language while German elites ruled. A national awakening in the 19th century standardized the language. Latvia gained independence in 1918, endured Soviet occupation, and regained independence in 1991. Latvian is now the sole official language.

Latvian has seven cases and complex verb conjugations with multiple aspects. Noun genders and adjective agreement require attention. However, as an Indo-European language, core vocabulary shares roots with other European languages, and pronunciation is regular.
