History of Maltese

Maltese evolved from Siculo-Arabic, the Arabic dialect of Sicily and Malta in the medieval period. After Norman conquest, Arabic influence waned but the language survived, absorbing Italian, Sicilian, and later English vocabulary. Malta's strategic location made it a cultural crossroads. Maltese became an EU official language when Malta joined in 2004.

Is Maltese Hard to Learn?

Hard

Maltese has Semitic root-based morphology like Arabic, which is unfamiliar to English speakers. However, 40% of vocabulary is Italian/Sicilian and another portion is English, making much vocabulary recognizable. The Latin alphabet makes reading accessible.
