History of Hawaiian
Hawaiian arrived with Polynesian voyagers around 400 AD. Written Hawaiian was developed by missionaries in the 1820s. The language nearly disappeared after annexation but has been revived through immersion schools (Pūnana Leo) and the state constitution recognizing it as an official language.
Is Hawaiian Hard to Learn?
Hawaiian has only 13 letters (5 vowels, 8 consonants) making it one of the smallest alphabets. Every syllable ends in a vowel, creating a flowing sound. The ʻokina (glottal stop) and kahakō (long vowels) require attention but are manageable.
