History of Maori
Maori arrived in New Zealand around 1300 AD from Eastern Polynesia. The language nearly died out in the 20th century but has been revived through immersion schools (kura kaupapa) and Maori television. Today Maori words like 'kiwi' and 'haka' are recognized worldwide.
Is Maori Hard to Learn?
Maori uses only 15 letters from the Latin alphabet and has consistent pronunciation rules. Grammar features like particle usage and possessive categories differ from English but are regular. The revival movement has created excellent learning resources.
